Glossary

Announce Date: The time when the phone was revealed or announced publicly (not released).

Network: The network technology supported by the phone. Dualband means both GSM 900/1800 networks and tri-band means GSM 900/1800/1900 support.

Status:
Coming soon - Phone announced, Not yet available in stores.
Available - Phone still in production, available in stores.
Discontinued - Phone not in production, available only second hand.
Cancelled - Phone announced and then officialy cancelled

Dimension: The phone's dimension in format (H x L x W x CC => Height x Length x Width x Volume in Cubic Centimeter)

Weight: Phone's Weight, in grams (g).

Display Type: Color or Monochrome, the color displays can be STN, TFT, TFD or OLED.

Design Style: The form factor of the phone, Candybar, Calmshell, Slider, Swivel, Flip.

Display Size: The size of the display in pixels. For alphanumeric displays the size is shown in characters and lines.

Ringtone Type: Type of ringtones supported: Monophonic, Polyphonic, WAV, MP3 etc.

Vibration: Capability to vibrate when receiving calls.

Speakerphone: Speakerphone is a microphone and loudspeaker provided separately from those in the handset and it allows multiple persons to participate in a conversation or to talk from a short distance from the phone.

Phonebook: The number of contacts/phone numbers saved in the phone memory only.

Call Records: The number of recent/last Missed, Received, Dialed calls are saved in the phone memory.

Card Slot: Provides room for memory expansion via memory cards. The types include miniSD, microSD, microSDHC, SD/MMC, RS-MMC, RS-DV-MMC, M2, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick PRO-HG etc.

Memory Capacity: The maximum size of expansion card that the phone supports. Memory cards are available in various sizes: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB etc.

GPRS: GPRS delivers wireless packet data services to GSM customers enabling users to use Inernet in thier phones (Data rate: 56 to 114 Kbps).

HSCSD: High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD), is a dedicated circuit-switched data communications technology for GSM and allows up to 57.6 Kbps by aggregating channels.

EDGE: EDGE is an enhancement of GPRS in 2G and 2.5g networks. It allows data rates up to 384 Kbps.

3G: 3rd-generation mobile technology (3G), is a more robust connection for mobile phones which supports full motion video, high-speed internet and video-conferencing.

WLAN: WLANs transmit and receive data wirelessly using radio frequency (RF) technology in a certain area. This allows users within a small zone to transmit data and share resources without physically connecting to other divices/computers.

Bluetooth: Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks or PANs. Bluetooth provides short-range wireless connectiona which enable users to exchange information between PDAs, cellphones, laptops, computers, digital cameras and other devices.

Infrared: The infrared port can be used send and receive data within a short distance using infrared light between devices like Computers, Cellphones, PDA, Laptops etc. Not very popular since Bluetooth arrived.

USB: USB (Universal Serial Bus) a protocol for transferring data to and from digital devices. Many phones use USB cable to connect to PC for transferring information, images, video ; loading software; syncronizing address etc.

OS: Generally the software that controls the operation of the phone is provided by the manufacturer. However in case of smartphones the Operating System is usually developed by third-party vendors with exceptions.

Messaging: Messaging functions supported by the phone including SMS, EMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, Fax and Email.

Internet Browser: The inernet browser provided with the phone that allows the user to access protocols like HTTP(Web), WAP, i-mode.

Color: The available case colors of the phone.

Games: List of pre-installed games that is provided withn the phone. You can also download nad install more games in some phones.

Camera: Many phones now have built-in camera which are able to take still pcitures or record video. Notable features of a camera include resolution and megapixels.

Java Support: It allows a J2ME programs to run on the phone.

Battery Type: The type of rechargable battery used by the phone. Examples include Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Lithium Polymer (Li-Po), Nickel-cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH).

Standby Time: The amount of time you can leave your fully charged cellphone turned on before the phone will completely discharge the batteries.

Talktime: The length of time you can talk on the phone without recharging the battery. When you talk, the phone takes additional power.

Service Light: A blinking light that indicates different status of the phone, like network, battery status etc.

Customization: The number of ringtones that are pre-installed on the phone and the space available of additional ringtones. Many phones includes a composer which can be used to create customized ringtones.

Internal Memory: The amount of built-in memory on the phone.

Radio: Built-in radio that comes with the phone.

Flash Light: Flash light.

Multi SIM: Some mobiles have slots for multiple SIM cards.

Global Roaming: Global roaming is a service that allows to use your own number whilst overseas.

Processor: The Central Processing Unit (CPU) of the phone.

Audio Format: The Audio formats supported by the phone. e.g. MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA, RA.

Battery Capacity: The battery capacity of the phone, generally measured in Milliamp Hour (mAh).

Antenna: The type of antenna used by the phone. e.g. Internal, Stub.

Voice Dialing: Enables user to call a person by saying his/her name.

Voice Command: Enables users to perform a task by saying the command rather than pressing buttons. Voice Commands is programmable.

Voice Recording: Cabability to record voice and conversations.

Voip: Voice Over Internet Protocol - allows user to make phone calls through the internet.

GPS: GPS is the satellite-based positioning technology that allows a GPS receiver to identify its location anywhere on Earth.

Video Playback: The video player that plays video on the phone.

Audio Playback: The audio player that plays audio track/music on the phone.

Keyboard: Type of keyboard associated with the phone. e.g. QWERTY keyboard, Snap-on QWERTY, Backlit QWERTY keyboard, SureType etc.

Predictive Text: Predictive text input is a pice of software that makes it easier of users to type SMS. You don't need to press each keypad several times in order to get the letter that you want whereas you can press the number corresponding to the letter and the phone should recognize the word automatically.

Touchscreen: The phone screen is touch-sensitive. User can use stylus or finger to give input rather than using the keypad.

Side Keys: Buttons on the side of the cellphone which provides easier access to certain funtionality such as volume control.

Video Format: Video formats supported by the phone such as H.263, H.264, MPEG-4, VBR, 3GPP, WMV, DivX, XviD, RealVideo 7/8/9/10, Flash Video, WMV9 etc.

Image Format: Image formats supported by the phone such as JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP etc.

Alarm: Shows if the alarm feature is available or not.

Calendar: Shows if the phone has a calendar.

Calculator: Shows if the phone has a calculator.

Stopwatch: Shows if the phone has a stopwatch.

Document Viewer: Lists the available document viewer that are installed in the phone such as PDF viewer.
