Nokia Siemens Networks has completed the first field test of a technology that will increase data speeds over EDGE networks, using a software solution called Downlink Dual Carrier EDGE. Based on the 3GPP release 7 standard, this new technology will be easy for carriers to implement over their existing EDGE networks.

Downlink Dual Carrier EDGE supports data speeds up to 592Kbps, which is similar to today's 3G WCDMA networks. The faster data speeds will allow EDGE users to view streaming video and other high-bandwidth activities that are historically only possible over 3G networks.
